MSME / Udyam Registration
Registration as a micro, small or medium enterprise on the Udyam portal.
Usually completed the same working day, subject to portal availability
Udyam registration records a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise. It is free, online, and based on self-declaration linked to PAN and GST data, but the benefits attached to it are substantial enough that it is worth doing correctly.
Classification depends on both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and on annual turnover, with the higher of the two determining the category.
What registration gives access to
The most commercially useful benefit is under the legislation on delayed payments: a buyer who does not pay a registered micro or small enterprise within the prescribed period becomes liable for interest, and the enterprise can refer the dispute to a facilitation council. Larger buyers must also disclose amounts outstanding to such enterprises in their financial statements.
Beyond that, registration is a common eligibility condition for priority sector lending, interest subvention schemes, government tender preferences and various state-level incentives.
Keeping the registration accurate
Because classification is linked to turnover and investment, a growing business can move between categories. The portal updates classification from PAN and GST data, and the registration should reflect the current position.
Details such as bank accounts, additional units and the activity description should be kept current, since schemes and tenders are assessed against what the certificate shows.
